Pet Obesity Awareness Day, observed annually on the second Wednesday of October (October 8 in 2025), is a vital reminder that our furry companions face a growing health crisis—and it’s one we can help solve.

What It’s All About

  • Founded in 2007 by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), this day aims to raise awareness about the risks of pet obesity and promote healthier habits.
  • It’s part of World Pet Obesity Week, which runs October 6–12 in 2025.

Eye-Opening Stats

  • 60% of cats and 56% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight or obese.
  • Yet only 39% of dog owners and 45% of cat owners recognize their pets as overweight.
  • Obesity shortens a dog’s life by 6–12 months and increases risk for:
    • Diabetes
    • Arthritis
    • Heart disease
    • Certain cancers
    • Anesthetic complications

What You Can Do

1. Know Their Ideal Weight

  • Ask your vet for a Body Condition Score (BCS) and healthy weight range.
  • Use APOP’s calorie calculator to guide feeding.

2. Portion Control

  • Avoid free-feeding.
  • Use a food scale instead of a measuring cup for accuracy.
  • Stick to scheduled meal times.

3. Choose the Right Food

  • Tailor food to life stage (puppy, adult, senior).
  • Consider weight-management formulas if needed.

4. Get Moving

  • Daily walks, playtime, and enrichment activities help burn calories and reduce stress.

5. Track Progress

  • Weigh your pet monthly.
  • Celebrate small wins—like fitting into a harness more comfortably or having more energy.
