National Pet Hydration Awareness Month is here! Did you know pets can get dehydrated quickly in the summer heat? It’s more than just a water bowl – let’s get creative!
1. Frozen Treats & Ice Pops
- DIY broth cubes: Freeze low-sodium chicken or beef broth into ice cube trays.
- Fruit-infused ice: Add pet-safe fruits like blueberries or watermelon to water before freezing.
- Doggy smoothies: Blend yogurt, water, and fruits like strawberries or apples (no seeds!) for a hydrating treat.
2. Pet Water Fountains
- Many pets, especially cats, prefer running water. Fountains mimic natural streams and encourage more drinking.
3. Hydrate Through Food
- Wet food: Canned food contains up to 80% moisture.
- Soak kibble: Add warm water or broth to dry food to boost moisture intake.
- Broth drizzle: Pour a splash of broth over meals to entice picky drinkers.
4. Interactive Hydration Toys
- Use toys that dispense water or frozen treats as your pet plays.
- Try lick mats with frozen yogurt or broth for a slow-release hydration boost.
5. Multiple Water Stations
- Place bowls in several locations—especially where your pet naps or plays.
- Use non-slip, wide-mouth bowls to make drinking easier and more appealing.
6. Flavor the Water
- Add a splash of tuna water (not oil) for cats or bone broth for dogs to make water more enticing.
7. Keep Bowls Clean
- Wash bowls daily to remove bacteria and odors. Some pets avoid murky or smelly water.
8. Cool Down with Shaded Breaks
- During outdoor play, take hydration breaks every 15–20 minutes in the shade.
- Use cooling mats to help regulate body temperature and reduce water loss.
