National Pet Hydration Awareness Month is observed every July and was launched by PetSafe in 2018 to spotlight a crucial but often overlooked aspect of pet care: keeping our furry companions properly hydrated—especially during the hot summer months.

Why It Matters

  • Pets are 60–80% water, depending on the species, making hydration vital for their health and mobility.
  • Dehydration can be dangerous, even fatal, if left unchecked.
  • Many pets—especially cats—don’t instinctively drink enough water, particularly if it’s stagnant.

Signs of Dehydration in Pets

Keep an eye out for:

  • Lethargy or low energy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dry, sticky gums
  • Sunken eyes
  • Reduced skin elasticity (test with a gentle pinch between the shoulder blades)
  • Excessive panting or dry nose

Tips to Keep Pets Hydrated

  • Fresh water daily: Refill bowls with clean, filtered water.
  • Multiple water stations: Especially in multi-pet homes or large spaces.
  • Wet food or broth cubes: Add moisture to meals with wet food or frozen broth treats.
  • Pet fountains: Many cats prefer running water.
  • Limit heat exposure: Avoid long walks or playtime during peak heat hours.
